Cochin or Kochi, as it is called now, has been an important trading port since the ancient ages. European traders were lured to this port as it offered them the lucrative opportunity to trade in Indian spices, an item much in demand in Europe during those days. With time it got the name ‘Queen of the Arabian Sea’ and even today, it is considered the commercial capital of Kerala.

Cochin is an important business center as well as a famous port on the Malabar coast. There are many tourist attractions in Cochin, making it an important destination for tourism in Kerala.. The many forts, churches and other buildings are reminders of the British and Portuguese presence in this city.


Tourist Attractions in Cochin:
 
  Chinese fishing Nets:

These Chinese Fishing Nets popularly known as Cheenavala is a unique feature of the city and is found nowhere else outside China. These are massive fishing nets used by Local fishermen to earn their living.

 
  St. Francis Church:

This Church is located at Fort Kochi and is one of the oldest Churches in Goa. Vasco Da Gama, the Portuguese navigator was initially buried in this Church. However, his body was later shifted to Portugal.

 
  Dutch Palace:

The Palace originally built by the Portuguese was modified by the Dutch and presented to the King of Kochi. The Palace has an exclusive collection of paintings portraying scenes from Hindu epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata.

 
  Hill Palace:

It is a 19th Century Palace located near Tripunithura and served as the seat of the Raja of the Province. The Palace has now been converted into a museum with a fine collection of antiques including the throne and the crown of the King.

 
  Bolghatty Palace:

Bolghatty palace built by the Dutch in 1744. Later it became the seat of the British Resident of Cochin. Today it is a hotel run by K.T.D.C. The grounds have a small golf course & several vantage points for lovely views of the harbour & the sea

 
  Kanjiramattom Mosque :

It is believed that the mosque was erected over the mortal remains of a Muslim saint, Sheikh Parid. Another great Muslim saint, Baver is supposed to have prayed here and attained salvation.

 
  Kodanad :

one of the largest elephant capturing centres of South India. In 1977 the elephant capturing came to an end, but the elephant kraal and training centre are still there intact.

 
  Malayattoor :

A place of prayer and pilgrimage; made rich by the foot steps of St. Thomas the Apostle, who sowed the seeds of Christianity in this part of the world.
